  • North Carolina Research: Genealogy and Local History by Helen F. Leary - This book contains information on the North Carolina State Archives holdings and finding aids, state and federal records and research strategies that address the needs of both novice and advanced genealogists.
  • North Carolina Wills: A Testator Index, 1665-1900 by Thornton W. Mitchell - This is an index to more than 75,000 persons who died and left wills in North Carolina between 1665 and 1900.  It lists the names of the testators, the county in which their wills were proved, the date of probate, the precise location of the recorded copy of the will in each of the counties (by book and page number), and the location of the original will.
  • The Way We Lived in North Carolina edited by Joe A. Mobley - Weaving research and interpretation around dozens of historic sites and the lives of ordinary people who lived and worked nearby, this book explores the social history of North Carolina from the precolonial period to the present.
